3 Reasons Why Hip Hop went into 'Rebuilding' Part. 2.

Over a year ago I released this blog and here we are 14 months later, and I decided i'd do a part 2.

This may come as a surprise, but lets revisit Late 2004 when a little song called 'Piggy Bank' came out. By this time Ja Rule was gasping for his career air, and 50 was on the top of the hip hop game when he released the one song that changed the decade.
To the naked eye 'Piggy Bank' was just another furious diss record for hip hop 'IT' kid at the moment, but little saw the domino effect it would have on the game.

Nas, Fat Joe, Lil Kim, Jadakiss, Shyne, and yes, Ja Rule was all a victim of 50's wrath which was just a 1 shot drive by to 80% of NY's elite emcee's at the time. Previous to this track there was no tension between most of the people 50 went at, this came clear out the blue. Now, we know that the 'New York, New York' made 50 VERY uncomfortable for whatever reason, and his insecurities led to the well calculated, and well executed diss track. That machine 50 had behind him was something NO artist wanted to have against them, and it made all artist in the NY area VERY cautious about who they wanted to work with due to 50's wrath.

Now, how did this effect hip hop? Not only did the power house Murder Inc Brand get officially finished, but 2 artist who had been putting NY on the POP charts the previous four 4 years went into commercial oblivion due to the masses taking 50s side. Fat Joe managed a couple of hits, but NEVER sold the records he reached pre 'Piggy Bank'. Jada didn't have an album out for the next 4 years, and the LOX couldn't get ANY support from Interscope.... yes, the label that 50 was signed too. In the end it even led to Styles P getting released from the company, which made him a non factor commercially. Now Nas, well... lets just say that a bunch of 13 year old's are now a bunch of 21 year olds and have absolutely NO respect for Nas' greatness. Lil Kim went to jail shortly after and Shyne, well... he was already in jail. So in a sense 50 Cent monopolized the NY music scene on a national level, cause at that point it was 50 Cent/G Unit Mania, Jay-Z had JUST retires, but some others like Fab and Busta, who wasn't mentioned in Piggy Bank who had a couple hits, meanwhile Tony Yayo sold 800,000 records.

So, there we have New Yorks demise because of Piggy Bank. After 2004 you saw the south's reign and dominate the radio, some good.. but alot of BS seeped thru (i.e d4l, crime mobb, Franchize Boyz, 'Looking boys') and even some Midwest BS like Jkwon, Jibbs and Huey got to eat. But it doesn't stop there.

50 Cent had just help put out an artist named THE GAME who just so happened to sell 5 Million records off the strength of the records 50 crafted for him, but that marriage didn't last long. THE GAME went on record to say that, despite the issues his own camp had with people like Nas and Fat Joe, he didn't care, he would work with them anyway. Shortly after he was released from the label, and a slew of 50 cent/Gunit Disses came about.

Now we have the GUNOT campaign. Games putting out DVDs, Mixtapes, diss tracks in the name of dissing 50. So now instead of just one state being divided, we have a whole nation taking either 50s, or Games Side.... at that point, one big power house, got crumbled down and scattered to little pieces. Em was on drugs, Dre wasn't doin much to push Detox, and 50 was the lone barrier of the '3 headed monster' fighting a pain in the ass campaign, which in the end, hurt his fanbase and his movement.

This all stemmed from 'PIGGY BANK' your looking at 5 artist who went from controlling the charts to having mediocre sales, and albums countlessly pushed back.

50 may have won the battle, but hip hop lost the War.

Somewhere within the last two decades, there's been several instances where fans are pinned into a corner, and felt as if they needed to choose to pick between artist A and artist B. Sometimes these artist have never had any differences, nor reason for fans to feel this way. I ask, why?

I've been listening to Drake since 2007, and J Cole is the most relate able artist out right now, to me. Why do people feel the need to pigeon hole them in the corner, and act as if we cant enjoy both artist equally? Yes, the debates are fun to a point, but sometimes it ends up being stupid and you end up depreciating the value/art of one artist.

People to this day still argue Jay-Z or Nas, which is fun.. yes, but alot of times in these debates we start pointing out flaws and facts that DON'T exist. Me personally, I love Nas and JayZ the same, and their cataloge speak for their greatness, I don't see a need why we HAVE to choose one.

In combat its different, in battle.. who won, 50 or Ross? Jada or Beans? Nas and Hov? Combats are supposed to come out with winners, and even tho theres not an 'official' ruling, the convos are great. Once those battles end, people have a hard time listening to the artist they least favored the same way.

I think this narrow mindedness started in 96 when the MEDIA blew up a beef between two record labels to a regional feud. That being said, people stuck with their sides, alliances for the artist were formed, and ever since then.. us a hip hop fans have stuck with that mentality.

Moral of the story is: If two artist are making great music, support both. Dont create a materialized feud in your head because of what the media wants.

Someone named..... Ja Rule might agree, and Lil Flip is not too far behind him.

First things first.

Fellas, if you just started talkin to a female, understand this..... you are not the only one. Accepting this fact will make you and your lady friends relationship much easier.

That being said, women use the fact that there a hot commodity way more effective than men do. Yea, when you first meet, she's into you, she wants to get to know you... your kinda of the priority, for a couple weeks. In the mean time, she is talkin to a couple dudes who are in phases 2 and 3 of there relationship. They have already been the priority, and there trying to keep themselves relevant. She keeps them around so she'll never be lonely.

Eventually, you will fade into phase # 2 and # 3 with the rest of the other guys... but you dont know this. Your still going hard, tryna impress her as if your in Phase #1.. little do you know, she's just entered phase #1 with another guy...

Lets do the math, she has a new fling... you, and lord knows how many other guys are expending energy as if your on phase one. She's only expending phase one energy on her new fling.

The female will then continue this cycle, have a roster of guys going hard at her, while she's only goin hard at whoever's hot at the moment. She gets to sit back, pick and choose whats she wants to do w/ those guys. Meanwhile, this girl always gives you that one or two days out the week where you feel like your in phase one. Its all part of the game fellas.

Now, girls will say 'well, its the fellas job to come after the female' and to an extent there right, but theres a difference between showin interest, and just being thirsty. Some men realize there in a rotation and move on, or decide to just fight it out, not even knowin that there former phase # 1 time is constantly being juggled by w.e guy caught her eye that week. She actually STILL MIGHT LIKE YOU. So your not gettin 'played' by definition.

Its tricky & most women end up lonley playing this little game. Most men end up being whore because the one chick they wanted to take serious, is playing games with them.

Thats life, thats women. Figure your own solution.

Top 10 Mixtapes of 2009 ( In no order )

1. Drake - So Far Gone - This will go down as the biggest mixtape of all time. What other mixtape has spawned 2 huge radio singles, a grammy nomination, and manage to sell 200k and counting after being released 9 months after a FREE release. Numbers don't lie. I initially thought Drake was reaching when I first heard it. After all, his previous two mixtapes featured the likes of Kardinall Offishal, Little Brother, Dwele, Rich Boy, Glenn Lewis, Nickelus F. ect.. This mixtape was flooded with singing and Lil Wayne features. Upon further review, its a excellent body of work, that elevated Drake from the unknown underground rapper from Toronto, to a Grammy Nominated Rookie of the Year.

2. J Cole - The Warm Up - fresh off signing with Roc Nation, NC's own couldnt have picked a better time to drop this tape. Unlike Drake, he had alot riding on this mixtape. The whole world was watching to see who's the 'new kid' Hov is putting his money behind. Well, he sure did deliver. North Carolina has another MC to be proud of. Now, if we can get him, 9th and Little Brother on one track.... ehh lets not get ahead of ourselves.

3. 50 Cent - War Angel - This was pretty much an album that FIF gave away. All original production, hardcore streets music we love 50 for. Honestly, if you don't like 50 at his rarest form, your just not gunna like him and you should stop checking for his music. This is the type of music that got 50 to where is now, and why the streets will never abandon him. See, the difference between 50 and Ja Rule is, 50 makes it a priority to please his street fan base w/ these mixtapes, and just when you think he lost a step.... He puts out something like this to prove you otherwise.

4. Lil Wayne - No Cielings - I actually forgot Wayne can rap to be honest. he fell off Mid - Late 2007 and hasn't been to same since. The end of 2009 he finally made his return, where you been nigga?

5. The Cool Kids - Gone Fishing ft. Don Cannon - I've been critical of The Cool Kid sin the past. I only thought they was popular due to there 80s themed style and music, which was 'trendy'. Even though I think thats still partially true, this mixtape was in constant rotation in the summer of 2009. Good work, but not for every one

6. Wiz Khalifa & Curren$y - How Fly - The 2009 Red and Meth if you ask me. Two people that turned there back on the industry and decided to do things there own way. Amd theyre doin a pretty good job at it.

7. Lloyd Banks - v.4 - He released this Volume of 'Return of the PLK' on his birthday. A double disc mixtape in which he proved he still have them slick punchlines, but his word play and song making ability has vastly improved from the Banks of years past. With 50 falling back from music, look at Banks to carry to tourch for The Unit and NYC hip hop in the near future.

8. Wale & 9th Wonder - Back To the Feature - This is actually the first time I took the time to listen to Wale, and that was off the strength of the '9th Wonder' part of the tittle. I was quite pleased, and the music on here is well rounded and for a person like me who never cared for him, it was a good introduction to a promising MC out of Dc.

9. Nipsey Hussle - West Coast is on the rise again, and Nipsey's buzz exploded in 2009, not many are able to have the music to compliment there buzz, Nipsey is the exception.

10. Willie The Kid - The Fly - After the release of his first EP 'Absolute Greatness' Willie went on and did what we all know him for, which is mixtapes. DJ Drama of coarse provided the commentary as Willie proves why he is one of the most underrated rookies of the new class, im sure he wont have t his problem for long.

Thats My top 10... Which is VERY debatable, its in no particular order. I judged the mixtapes off impact, song arrangement, and cohesiveness.

The only reason Lupe wasnt on the list, is because i felt these other mixtape took alot longer to arrange and more meat and potatoes was put on it. Lupe is just stupidly nice, and threw some bars together for us feins.

Slaughterhouse Concert: More then a Show..

It's November 17th, a Tuesday, and on a strange turn of events Im actually workin on a Tuesday(which never happens). Im also working until 9:30, which also never happens. The bill states '8'. I figured with opening acts and being them being on 'Rapper Time' they wouldn't be on stage until 11. We'll, slaughterhouse isnt a regular group, and after the opening acts, they hit the stage damn near 10 on the dot.

Meanwhile I'm rushing home got dressed, Jus to find out club parking doesnt take credit cards. Skipp to me finally getting to the venue, and them not accepting Cards ether, and there ATM has a $5 usgage fee. So $25 for a concert. It was so thick I ended up watch them perform there last 3 songs from the back of the bar, before they went to a meet and greet. Me, Im not into auto graphs as much as meeting the people artist, so what do i do while there signing auto graphs?

What do I do? Get to work.

Walked back to my inconvenient parking place and grab a box of "Homeless MIllionaire" Mixtapes to hand out to the fellow hip hop heads. For a hour after the concert was over... I was there, not to get autographs, no pictures.... To spread my music to people who would appreciate good hip hop. I was out $25 and was kinda bummed I didnt see the concert, but... After a half hour of handing them out to all the leaving fans, I see a crowd behind the tour bus. I go around there, its Crooked I.

I waited about 5-10 minutes until every one got there pics, and he's about to leave I gave him gap, and say 'yo Im out here grinding.. here's my mixtape'. Crooked I daps me looks me in my eyes and says 'Dont ever stop.. whatever you do don't stop, I mean it' I told him that meant the world to me, and it did. So Im about to leave off and there's another tour bus.. I run into Royce Da 5'9, tell him how big of a fan I am and I appreciate him coming out.. Handed him a mixtape. Royce: 'You sellin these' he said and I see him reach for his wallet... I coulda try to get some of the money back I spent on the event, but I say 'nah homie, I'm just gettin my name out there' Royce says 'Keep grindin homie, thanks alot' and as he walks off.. he looks at the CD and says 'Ima check you out for sure'..

As I wait for Budden for 3 minutes, then I see another crowd form, and its Joell. Once again I wait 5 minutes for everyone to get there pics, and as he walks off.. I say 'Yo Joell, heres my mixtape man', he daps me up and says 'thanks man, keep grinding man.. dont stop'. I waited for Budden but I think he was bloggin, my mixtape is more towards the 'Mood Musik' theme then any other music the other guys put out.. but I went to my car content.

Eventually all this grinding and waiting outside just for a CHANCE someone could listen to my music has to pay off. Slaughterhouse is by far my favorite hip hop group, compelled with a couple of my favorite MC's. For them to acknowledge what Im doing and take the mixtape and encourage me to 'Keep going, Dont ever stop', gave me extra fuel.

Being a good MC in a city (Orlando) that gets no A&R love is a struggle I have been dealing with for years, but its MC's like Joell, Crooked, Budden, and Royce that make me not give up, and for them to put a little battery in my back to keep going meant more then the world will ever know..

3 Reasons Why Hip Hop went into 'Rebuilding'

2009 has been the best year in hip hop in a while. From the surfacing of Drake to the mainstream. The Slaughterhouse Machine actually pumpin out a dope album. The return of Eminem. Raekwons return.Kanye rappin again. A Majority of the XXL's 'Freshman Class' Making billboard noise. We can all say, hip hop is starting to feel good again.

That being said, hip hop is just starting to rebuild again. The genre has been in a slump and left for dead for the last 3 years, labels, money, and wack rappers are the obvious things to blame but I've come up with 3 things that actually played a HUGE part in hip hops demise. In no order fyi

1. The cancelation of BET's Rap City.

BET took the staple of hip hop TV off the air, slowly but surly. Going from 2 hours of pure hip hop, to 1 hour, and taking out 'The basement' and flip flopping host like a fish out of water. When finally we thought DJ Q45 was a qualified replacement, BET and its new owner (ran by a caucasian women) decided to pull the plug.

Why was this important in the demise of hip hop? Balance.

Rap City gave you 2 house of pure hip hop videos, it spawned alot of careers. While 106 gave Bow Wow his start, he didnt need Rap City. Field Mobb did. Nelly didnt need rap city. The Clipse did. Every kid would run home, and watch all types of hip hop heaven from 4-6pm until 106 came on. You see its was cycle. The people actually chose the hip hop that became popular. It went from catching your hip hop video on Rap City, to voting for it on 106 (which came on right after Rap City), then if you get lucky.. Itll spill to TRL, which gave you the big checks.

Bottom line is, we had options. East, west, north, south, midwest, because of Rap City, i discovered T.I(during Im Serious), I became a big fan, I usta stay glued to the TV to watch Kardinall Offishals 'Bakardi Slang', these are moments in hip hop I miss. Yes they played Nelly, and Fab, and Diddy but those artist was getting MTV play. I remember rockin too Coo Coo Kal 'In my projects' Clipse 'Grindin' 5 months before is caught fire. Petey Pablo.. Who all ended up getting some airplay on the radio. Artist who wouldnt have gotten anywhere with out Rap City. Why? cause the people had a say of who's hot. Now the people controlling hip hop, are the people who don't listen to it.

Now, we are force fed music by the 'big shots' and the kids like bullsht cause they don't know any better. Who's gunna expose them to Killer Mike? Whos gunna expose them to BOB? Whos gunna expose them to Skyzoo? Who's gunna expose them to Little Brother? Nipsey Hussle? Pac div? Blu? Corey Gunz? Wiz Khalifa? and i could go on forever..

I know who wont.. BET

Alot of people complain about rappers not coming back to the hood enough. Saying they "sell out" and as i agree some people get money and act stupid. Here's my take

1. Most of them do back to there blocks for charity event, as long as there giving back to the community that raise them, shouldnt that be enough?

2. Theres always a group of people in any city that someone blows up in that will say 'rapper a or b cant come here' then dap them up when they see in in those same streets.
"now im hearin i cant come back home - you know when i heard that? when i was BACK HOME"- William H.

3. Alot of mc's in the industry, pretty much took all there closest homies out the hood with them, so why go back? The hood is not paris or times square just to be walkin thru on vacation or spare time.. so the point of goin to a war zone(which any hood is).. is exactlly what?

4. I refer to it was back when i was kid.. when i moved from a block or a complex.. if i aint have people there.. why ima go back? kick the breeze? see if they painted something nah, so if you gettin money im sure its the same mentality, as long as they rep on wax, im coo.

5. Havin "them thangs in the hood" is somethin all rappers should reconsider, they work too hard to be put thereselves in the same situations as dirt bomb dudes w/ nothin to loose and some heat on em w/ rent due.. its wolves.

i.e when i hear a rapper not being in the hood enough, just refer to the late great $tack Bundles, who was back on his blocck at 5 am, cats knew he would always be there so they targeted him, im sure if he could, he would trade a litte "streeet cred" for his life back

I was once skeptical about the man we call Barack. I saw the t-shirts.. i felt the buzz. Alot of school peers was exacted. It was a different, but then again it wasn't. It was as if Jay-Z album was coming out, or the new Saw was about to drop. Myself and many people thought.. this is cool but, theres no way they'll let him run. Time passed, and his rating got stronger, the buzz got bigger. So i said to myself, this is good.. but previous political experiences had made me not be confident in our system.. or us as Americans. I followed him during the conventions and heard him speak and said. This guy isn't bad at all, but we'll see. Meanwhile i see more shirts and alot of people say.. "we gunna have a black man running for president.. he got my vote". That wasn't enough for me. It was actually discouraging, because alot of people were uneducated about what he wanted to do besides "change". Not only that i figured the republicans would surely give the American people a real good choice due to there part in destroying Americas foundation within the last 8 Years.. Thanks for Bush. Twice? damn republicans.
One night, im flipping threw channels and i saw Barack on CNN, on his college tour. I couldn't resist but to watch, he was growing on me, and i was rooting for him but needed to back up my reasons. Then he started to speak, he spoke on raising pell grants, awarding students who help in the community w/ little to no tuition fee for college students. I have been in college for two years.. this exited me. he then spoke on tax cuts for people making less than $250,000. I haven't heard anyone of relevance in American politics talk about these issues on a grand scale like this. That was all i needed to hear.. and following his other speeched he never wavered in those topics. At that point, he had me.

Fast Forward 5 months, an attended speech.... and a Political Ass whooping later. We have a new president... and in the far future when i have a son, lord willing.. Ill actually get to tell him "you can be whatever you want kid, whatever.

That being said.. Thanks Obama.. and black people, we now have a standard we must live up to, a role model for our generation, a reason to care if you previously didn't, Yes we can.

As most fans were, i was pissed when "Padded Room" got pushed back until Feb 09. As consolation, Budden just released "Halfway House" which is the mixtape/ep thats the prequal to his official sophmore album. Blogspot doesnt pay me for album reviews so ima just advise hip hop heads to cop this. Download.. or whatever. Its only 12 tracks.. Still worth a listen.

Im not gunna get into the north /south hype.. im from Harlem.. Relocated to florida in no biased

1. T-pain wasnt that bad for a last minute guest but.. lets not have that again

2. I love nas but his stage show is only good as the crowd.(i seen him live.. it was dope) and i thought he was gunna do "queens get the money" like Green Lantern Said.. so i was dissapointed in that.

3. Fab said on hot 97 a little while ago he is mad n.y isnt represented on these awards and hes right.. 50 coulda performed he gotta new single. even jada.. busta woulda ripped it.. but no, they put Bow wow and Soulja Boy to perform.. on a single thats came. went. and flopped(sorry fellas).

I understand Since its in Atlanta they wanna show the hometown love.. but this has been going on for years..

4. That being said, they did Ace Hood wrong by puttin im up w/ the big dogs.

5. Wtf is up with shawty lo winning the new artist award when flo rida def. had the 3 bigger singles.. like i said.. a biased.

All in all It wasnt great but now that The Source awards are.. well idk.. and The Ozone Awards are The Southzone awards... Ill take this is compensation..
